Congratulations on the fine art degree! Horticultural stuf sounds fascinating. I have a very small garden, but we grow a few things and have a pond with frogs! They've taken away a hundred or so of the goats in the valley and say they've taken th...

By the way there is a Facebook 'DoodleArt' group if you're into that sort of thing. I rather dominate it at the moment but it would be great if others uploaded stuff too!

Don't think so. I've had a couple of recorder pieces with them for more than a year and as yet not had any royalties! They have sent copies of the new work, but the postal strike inn London has eaten them up for now. I hope they release them all s...

New Concerto in E minor for Violin and Junior Orchestra

Having tinkered around with phrasing and stuff here, if you click on the link, are the improved midi files for

Sian's Violin Concerto, written for a very talented young violinist in my junior orchestra.

They're still a very poor substitute for real instruments. I hope we get to record it at some point.

There should be cadenzas in first and last movements. Not sure whether to write them or leave them to Sian herself. They go w… Continue

My London Weekend

Off to London. Leaving the house at 4.30am! The train from Tiverton stopped at several stations on its way to Bristol Temple Meads where I took another train from platform 13 to London Paddington.

Leaving the house itself was a bit of a palaver, umming and aahing about whether or not to bring the laptop. Shall I? Shan’t I? I set off without it and went to get some cash out. Meanwhile I’d left the mobile at home. Then doubled back to get the mobile, which I'd left behind. Went on up the hill and… Continue

Changes

After 20 years in the classroom I have just 25 days left, maybe a couple less as I'll be attending the odd conference/training day, before I take up a new job as Assistant Director - Access and Participation for Somerset Music.

This is quite a scary moment. The school day is timetabled literally down to the last minute, how will I cope with a more flexible framework? Will I be able to meet the requirements, understand what on earth I'm supposed to be doing!! Everyone tells me I'll be great for… Continue

Hi Rupert

I win a prize for dunce of the year - I didn't realise your London blog notes included your compositions. You never wrote - click on the link!!!

I've just listened to Riverside - gentle but effective. The ending has a Scott Joplin feel to it?

Now your violin mini concerto was a gem! Loved it!

Sorry for mixing up my moors... forgive my Northern-centric ignorance!
Re the folk music~ husband Dave plays mandolin, mandola and is learning the accordion (he's going on a weekend course soon to Whitney, Oxfordshire, to get him going on it), daughter #1 plays domra, fiddle and whistles, daughter #2 plays concertina. I've been late off the blocks with music but I'm loving it..., I play a bass marimbula. It's fairly idiot-proof and fills out the sound nicely. It can sound a bit like a double bass when I get it right!
We got into folk via the Storytelling Festival at Wenlock Edge, which we've been going to since the girls were little. Ellie (elder) is playing with a Breton folk dance band, in France, while she's on her year abroad, from Aberystwyth Uni... I'm so thankful how much music has shaped our lives and given us so much pleasure, how about you Rupert? Have you come from a musical family?.

Hello Rupert,
I've really enjoyed looking at your photos, especially the snowy ones. I've visited Whitby and Dartmoor too, you've captured them very well.
Nice to read you are a musician and composer, my family have a family folk band (for fun only... we're no great shakes,), we enjoy playing at the local folk club.
Best wishes
Julie
